Ep. 81 Dr. Stanley Andrisse: From Prison Cells to PhD
Dr. Stanley Andrisse grew up in Ferguson, Missouri. He started selling drugs and was arrested for the first time at 14 years old. By his early 20s, he found himself sitting in front of a judge facing 20 years to life on drug trafficking charges. The judge sentenced him to 10 years in a maximum-security prison. While in prison, Dr. Andrisse lost his father to type 2 diabetes which inspired him to flip his script. Shortly after, he started spending a majority of his time reading about diabetes and applying to graduate programs.
Upon release, and after several rejections, Dr. Andrisse was accepted into a PhD program at Saint Louis University. He simultaneously completed his PhD and MBA and graduated at the top of his class. Today, Dr. Andrisse is an endocrinologist and professor at Howard University College of Medicine, researching type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. Outside of his career in diabetes research, Dr. Andrisse is the founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit organization, From Prison Cells to PhD, and author of the book From Prison Cells to PhD: It is Never Too Late to Do Good.
In this episode of Flip Your Script with Kristi Piehl, Dr. Andrisse proves it's never too late to do good and explains how he’s using his nonprofit organization to impact the lives of people with criminal convictions through advocacy, mentoring and policy change.
