Ep. 64 R. Eric Thomas: From Elle Columnist to Keeping the Joy

When R. Eric Thomas released his first book in 2020, Lin Manuel Miranda called him one of his favorite writers and Jenna Bush Hager selected it for her Today Show reading club.

His memoir, Here for It, or How to Save Your Soul in America, brings humor to difficult topics as R. Eric Thomas authentically shares his experience from struggling as a gay Christian creative to finding his soulmate in church (spoiler alert: he married the pastor). He’s vulnerable as he talks about bringing people together while writing about potentially polarizing topics.

Before telling his own story and becoming a national bestselling author, he spent four years writing “Eric Reads the News,” a popular daily humor column on ELLE.com. He is also a television writer for the Peabody Award-winning series Dickinson on AppleTV+ and Better Things on FX, a playwright and the long-running host of The Moth in Philadelphia and Washington D.C.

Flip Your Script host Kristi Piehl laughs and learns with R. Eric Thomas, one of her dream guests, about the importance of sharing truth, spreading joy and bringing people together.
